Dr. Adshead is a forensic psychiatrist and psychotherapist. She is a qualified member of the Institute of Group Analysis and is trained in Mentalisation-based Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. She worked for more than 25 years as a therapist of violent offenders, mainly in the context of psychiatric hospitals and prisons. She has a particular interest in attachment theory as applied to forensic practice, and in 2003 she wrote, together with Professor Friedmann Pffafflin, a book on the subject, called "A Matter of Safety." She has recently contributed to a chapter on attachment theory to the forensic psychology textbook "Clinical Forensic Psychology" (Garofalo & Sijtsema, 2021) and she published a book entitled "the Devil You Know," in collaboration with Eileen Horne. She also has a special interest in the issues of insecure attachment and child maltreatment perpetrated by mothers.
